As many of you know, our multi-disciplinary workspace includes physiotherapy services. If you have ever wondered where physiotherapy could fit into your care plan I am hoping I have at least some of the answers for you! Physiotherapy covers a broad spectrum of treatments and ailments and is typically grounded in movement and exercise. The primary goal of physiotherapy is to reduce pain and to restore function and mobility in order to get the individual back to the things they want (and need) to be doing. Physiotherapy can be utilized in many situations, but most commonly we work with the following conditions:

Post-operative/Post-surgical rehabilitation

o   Knee replacements

o   Hip replacements

o   ACL surgery

o   Shoulder surgeries

o   Ankle fractures

Sports injuries

o   Sprained ankles

o   Meniscal or ligament injury

o   Tennis elbow

o   Knee pain

o   Runner’s knee

o   Shoulder pain

o   Concussion management

General pain/dysfunction

o   TMJ pain (Jaw pain)

o   Back pain

o   Tendinopathy/Tendonitis

o   Plantar fasciitis

o   Neck pain

o   Falls/Balance issues

o   Headaches

Pelvic Health

o   Post-partum assessment

o   Incontinence

o   Prolapse

o   Pelvic pain

Preventative management

o   Exercise programming

o   Running programs

o   “Return to gym” programming

o   General mobility exercises 

So in short, if you have one of the above, there’s a good chance we can help! But, what does the process look like?

Once booking an appointment we do a thorough assessment to determine the history of your injury and to determine which structures are involved. We then develop a patient-centered program that considers your injury, your goals, your access to equipment, and your current level of activity. Your program will always include education on your injury and exposure to some goal oriented movements and exercises, but may also include some anti-inflammatory treatment to address any pain, inflammation, or swelling. These treatments may include IFC/TENS, LASER therapy, acupuncture, dry needling, ultrasound, heat, ice, taping, or passive mobility exercises including stretching or joint mobilization. From then on, your treatment will be graded and progressed based on how your pain and injury progress.
