It’s All In The Hips
Author: Dr. Rick Parisien, Chiropractor
Does bending forward to pick something up off the ground or to tie up your shoes bother your back? Odds are you’re dealing with something called “flexion-intolerant low back pain”. This type of back pain can be caused by all sorts of reasons. A few causes of this type of pain might include a muscle strain, joint sprain or a disc injury in your back. Regardless of its cause, some overarching recommendations can be made on what to do about it.
Remove pain provoking positions and find relieving positions to rest in
More simply put, avoid what bothers it and do what is comfortable (in the short term)
Replace bending with your back with “THE HIP HINGE”
See our “How To Hip Hinge” video above
Develop muscular endurance in maintaining a neutral spine
This can be done through rehabilitative exercises including: bird dogs, side planks, front planks, deadbugs and many more!
Enhance or improve your thoracic spine (mid-back) and hip mobility to prevent your lumbar spine (low-back) from having to compensate
This is where seeing a chiropractor can REALLY help, along with specific mobility drills including: cat-camels, thoracic spine rotations, hip 90-90’s and many more.
